Description
This sparkling beauty has the typical orange and black fritillary pattern on the upper side of the wings with the silvery spangled areas on the underside of the wings. It has a wide yellow band between the silver spangles on the underside of the hind wing. The Great Spangled Fritillary is a medium sized butterfly that can fly very quickly and is easy to see while nectaring. They enjoy grassy, prairie areas that have a water source close and the caterpillars feed on Violets, so a partially shaded area will be beneficial for this winged beauty.
