Description
The Great Spangled Fritillary is a larger butterfly and can be seen in Northwest Ohio from June to September. It is common to the state and is found in all counties.
It likes woods, woodland edges, fields and gardens. It stops frequently to nectar especially on milkweed.
Females are larger and darker. They do not appear until later in the summer. At this time the males are already flight worn.
These butterflies lay their eggs on and near various species of violets. The larvae feed at night.
